This cornerstone of chiropractic care involves the application of controlled but gentle force to specific joints in the spine. The goal is to restore proper “alignment”, improve joint function, and alleviate pain. Manipulation can enhance mobility and facilitate the body’s natural healing processes.
many patients often hear a cracking sound during spinal manipulation, commonly referred to as “cavitation.” This intriguing phenomenon occurs when a joint is adjusted and involves the rapid release of gas bubbles that have accumulated in the synovial fluid surrounding the joint.
When our chiropractors apply a specific force to a joint, it creates a sudden change in pressure within the joint capsule. This pressure drop allows dissolved gases—primarily carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen—to form bubbles. When the joint is manipulated, these bubbles rapidly collapse or burst, resulting in the familiar popping or cracking sound.
It’s important to understand that this sound does not determine the success or effectiveness of the adjustment. Many patients experience relief and improved mobility, regardless of whether they hear a crack during the process. Additionally, not all chiropractic techniques produce this sound, but many find it satisfying and reassuring.
The primary goal of spinal manipulation is to restore proper alignment and function to the joints, alleviate pain, and enhance overall well-being.
